INDIANAPOLIS | Using the power of his new job to improve the work product of his old one, state Rep. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell, won committee approval Thursday for a proposal changing the meeting date for consideration of a mandatory township report.

House Bill 1276, which now advances to the full House, requires township boards to meet in February, instead of January, to review and approve the annual spending report of the township trustee. The report still would be due to the state by March 1.

"It's pretty tough to do a year-end audit in January for the preceding year," Niemeyer said. "The bank statement doesn't even come in until the 20th (of January)."

Niemeyer served 23 years as trustee and auditor of Lake County's West Creek Township before winning election to the House in November.

"This is something I had a lot of concerns about over the years," he said.

The legislation is supported by the Indiana Township Association.
