INDIANAPOLIS | Following in the tire treads of his predecessor, Gov. Mike Pence will lead a motorcycle ride through east-central Indiana Friday.

The 100-mile trip will leave the Statehouse at 9 a.m. region time and travel to Rushville, Connersville and Liberty over the course of the afternoon.

The ride is sponsored by ABATE of Indiana, a motorcycle safety group. Participation is free, but donations will be collected for the Indiana National Guard Relief Fund.

The first-year Republican governor told reporters this summer he was learning to ride a motorcycle so he could participate in the event.

Former Gov. Mitch Daniels, a lifelong motorcycle rider, started "Ride with the Governor" in 2005.

Daniels led hundreds of bikers to Jasper County's Fair Oaks Farms in 2010 and to Valparaiso and Merrillville in 2006.
