INDIANAPOLIS | Gov. Mike Pence will soon sign his energy oversight plan into law thanks in part to the efforts of three Northwest Indiana legislators.

State Sens. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, and Lonnie Randolph, D-East Chicago, along with state Rep. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell, co-sponsored Senate Bill 529, establishing the Office of Energy Development and empowering Pence to appoint a Chief Energy Officer to run Indiana's ethanol, alternative fuel and other energy programs.

The measure also creates the Office of Defense Development under the lieutenant governor tasked with enticing defense contractors to locate in Indiana.

The House voted 97-0 for the legislation on Tuesday.

It passed the Senate 47-3 on Feb. 25 and is the first item on the Pence agenda to make it to the governor's desk.
