INDIANAPOLIS | Eric Holcomb, the chairman of the Indiana Republican Party, will become state chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., starting July 10.

Coats said Holcomb's three years experience leading the party and running the 2004 and 2008 campaigns of Gov. Mitch Daniels proves he's a results-oriented, well-respected leader.

"Eric has the experience and leadership skills to oversee my Indiana operations and assist me in working on behalf of Hoosiers," Coats said.

Holcomb surprised Hoosier Republicans when he and three other party leaders announced Wednesday they are quitting.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence is expected to select a new GOP leadership team.
