INDIANAPOLIS | U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Indianapolis, isn't apologizing after calling CNN anchor Carol Costello "beautiful" Thursday, while saying she didn't understand the federal government shutdown, but insists his remarks were not meant to be hurtful.

"At the end of a spirited and very important debate, I was simply keeping it from unnecessarily ending in an unfriendly or contentious way," Rokita said. "I intended no offense to Ms. Costello."

The Munster native has been criticized by commentators and pundits across the nation for his apparent sexism.

Rokita, whose congressional district includes Newton and Jasper counties, also is continuing to defend his widely mocked claim that the Affordable Care Act is "one of the most insidious laws ever created by man."
