INDIANAPOLIS | U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Indianapolis, awkwardly ended a CNN television interview Thursday by praising anchor Carol Costello's looks while suggesting she doesn't understand the federal government shutdown.
"Carol, you're beautiful, but you have to be honest as well," Rokita said on the nationally broadcast program.
Costello had questioned why Rokita was continuing to take his Congressional paycheck while more than 800,000 federal workers are on furlough because the Republican-controlled U.S. House is insisting on cuts or delays to Obamacare before it will approve a complete government spending plan.
Rokita's remarks prompted widespread criticism of the Munster native's apparent sexism.
The gaffe comes two days after Rokita was mocked on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" for claiming the Affordable Care Act is "one of the most insidious laws ever created by man."
Rokita electronically defended that claim Thursday afternoon on Twitter while the U.S. Capitol was locked down due to a nearby shooting.
