CHICAGO | Family members say Sen. Mark Kirk has been released from the rehabilitation center in Chicago where he had been recovering from a stroke.

Kirk's office released the statement Thursday saying the Illinois Republican has recovered to the point where he can move home with his family.

The statement says Kirk will continue to work on his recovery as an out-patient at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

In the days following his stroke in January, Kirk underwent emergency surgery that included the temporary removal of part of his skull to allow for swelling. He moved from a hospital to the rehabilitation center in February.

Besides his exercises, he has held frequent meetings at the center with visiting staff and congressional colleagues.
