INDIANAPOLIS | The newly appointed at-large member of the state's Board of Education plans to tour Indiana starting next month to better understand the needs and concerns of teachers and parents.

Gordon Hendry, an Indianapolis Democrat, said because his work experience is in commercial real estate and the law, he believes it's important to meet those working on the front lines of Hoosier schools.

"I'm a parent and a product of our state's public schools, but I'm not an educator by training," Hendry said. "I want to make sure I'm accessible and listening to everyone who has a stake in what I believe is the most important issue facing our state right now."

The Bloomington native and former Indianapolis public access counselor is expected to make at least one region stop on his tour.
