INDIANAPOLIS | Brett Voorhies, an Indianapolis member of the United Steelworkers Union, was elected Tuesday president of the Indiana AFL-CIO, a federation of 800 local unions representing more than 300,000 Hoosier workers.

"As someone who grew up in this movement and spent my entire career working on its behalf, I'm humbled to be given this responsibility by my union brothers and sisters," Voorhies said.

Voorhies begins his four-year term facing declining union membership following passage of Indiana's right-to-work law in 2012 and a Republican-controlled Legislature determined to dial back labor rights.

He'll be aided by Joe Breedlove, a union electrician elected to a third term as secretary-treasurer, and 20 local vice presidents.
