Blood drive | Lansing
Heartland Blood Centers will have a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 22 at Baker's Square, 3545 Ridge Road. Donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health. Donors who have traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months should contact Heartland to determine eligibility.

Appreciation dinner | Lynwood
LARC will hold its annual appreciation dinner starting at 6 p.m. April 4 at Villa de Bruno in Lynwood. It will celebrate LARC's tradition of serving people with developmental disabilities in Lansing and other south suburban communities. The evening will include recognition of LARC employees, supporters and clients for their service within the organization. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person and both a silent and live auction of donated items will be offered to attendees. Tickets for a quilt raffle are $1 each or six for $5.

Volunteer workshop | Lansing
The Lansing Public Library and the South Area Literacy Council will present a workshop to train volunteers interested in tutoring adults who need to speak, read and write in English. After completing training, volunteers will spend two hours each week with their assigned student. Tutoring sessions take place at local library.
The workshop will be presented in two sessions: from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5 and April 12. Both are at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave.
Volunteers do not need college degrees or know how to speak a foreign language. There is no fee for the training program and materials will be provided.

Bereavement | South suburbs
Ingalls hospice program offers Hope, Help & Healing, a free bereavement support group. This group is designed to provide both education and support for adults who have experienced a significant loss. Weekly and monthly meetings are available for individuals and families who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

Ingalls Hospice and Home Care offers help to the South Suburban community. In fiscal year 2006-07, volunteers donated more than 1,900 hours of their time in activities such as providing support to patients and families in their homes and inpatient units, running light errands, filing, answering phones and clerical duties, preparing bereavement mailings and contributing bereavement support and staffing information desks.

Organ donation | Illinois
Organ and tissue donor registration is open for those who have never registered or those registered prior to Jan. 1, 2006. Signing the back of a driver's license is no longer adequate. The new registry also eliminates the need for potential donors to have consent from surviving family members or loved ones. Donors must be 18 or older.

Lansing Public Library and Friends of Lansing Public Library accepts donations of used adult and children's books, audio books and music for its book sales. They cannot accept Reader's Digest condensed books, magazines, encyclopedias more than five years old or books with mold or mildew.

HEROS FUNDRAISER | Lowell
A family fundraising event will be held March 30 for Military HEROS, a newly formed foundation aimed at helping military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The event is from noon to 7 p.m. March 30 at D.C.'s Country Junction, 3599 W. 161st Ave. It feature bands such as Scamp, Shud Up and Drive, Flint Lock, Country Junction, Spare Time and Nick Danger. Raffle prizes will include a guitar autographed by country singer Mark Chestnut and two front-row tickets to any country concert at the Midwest Amphitheater in Tinley Park, Ill. There also will be activities for children, including face painting and balloon animals. Tickets are $10 per person with ages 15 and younger admitted free. Sondra Julian, of Chesterton, started the foundation after her son was deployed to Iraq last year. She formed the Military HEROS Foundation, known as M-HEROS, which stands for Mental Health Extras Restoring Our Soldiers. Julian is trying to form a national network of doctors outside of the Veterans
Administration who would agree to treat returning vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
