HIGHLAND | The Town Council is asking Gov. Mitch Daniels to treat Lake County the same way he is treating Marion County over the property tax assessment problem.
To that end, the council unanimously adopted a resolution Monday night requesting an investigation of the recent assessments of all local properties in Lake County.
The resolution says Marion County's commercial and industrial property assessments were either undone or inaccurately performed, resulting in an unfair shift in property taxes onto residential property owners.
Daniels late last week ordered a full reassessment of all Marion County parcels and that he will freeze the Marion County tax bills at 2006 levels.
"There are similar issues in Lake County as in Marion County" where the trending may be too high in some instances and too low in others, said Council Vice president Joseph Wszolek, R-4th.
An investigation needs to be done now because the tax bills could be issued in about two months, Wszolek said. "It's too late" if they come out before any action can be taken, he stressed.
If the investigation finds similar problems as with Marion County, the resolution asks for new assessments on all Lake County parcels and for the 2006 tax levels to be frozen.
