DONATE BLOOD | Lansing

LifeSource is collecting blood for the victims of the Haitian earthquake. The local donor center is at No. 2 River Plaza on Torrence Avenue. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are welcome. Hours are from noon to 7 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays; from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays and from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays.

SOUP & SALAD SUPPER | Hammond

St. John Bosco Youth Group offers an all-you-can-eat soup and salad supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays during Lent beginning March 3 and continuing through March at the parish hall, 7111 Columbia Ave. Menu consists of soup, salad, bread and butter, crackers, dessert and beverage. At least three homemade soups will be offered, one will be a nonmeat soup. Price includes all soups and is $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Carry-outs available for $5, which includes one bowl of soup, bread and butter, salad and dessert. A Lenten Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent.

BURNHAM PLAN EXHIBIT | Chicago

How did Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan for Chicago relate to Chicago's Southeast Side? The exhibit "The Burnham Plan: Impetus for Change on the Southeast Side" is at the Vodak East Side Library, 3710 E. 106th St. The exhibit portrays the aspects of the 1909 Burnham Plan that relate to Chicago's Southeast Side and subsequent planning initiatives for that area. The exhibit was originally displayed at the Southeast Chicago Historical Museum.  Exhibit runs until May.

PRESCHOOL SCREENING | University Park

The Family Development Center at Governors State University will hold informational meetings and preschool screenings monthly for admission into prekindergarten programs beginning this fall. Children ages 3, 4 and 5 are eligible for admission into the full and half-day, three- and five-day prekindergarten programs.

Admission is open to all students. Discounted admission is available to qualified students. Screening is required to meet qualification requirements. Children must be 3 years old at the time of screening.

Informational meetings and screenings will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. March 17, April 8 and April 14, May 12, and June 10. The Family Development Center is located on the campus of Governors State University, 1 University Parkway.

Beginning bridge lessons are being offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Friday at Hartsfield Village, 10000 Columbia Ave. Lessons are $5 with an opportunity to play afterward until 1 p.m. This is for newcomers and those wishing to brush up on their skills.

RELAY FOR LIFE | Chicago Heights

Relay for Life of Chicago Heights takes place 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. May 21 at Marian Catholic High School, 700 Ashland Ave. Meetings are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Bloom Township Center, 425 S. Halsted St. Cancer survivors are sought to attend the survivor dinner and participate in the opening ceremony.

SINGLES MEET | Hobart, Griffith

New Horizons Singles Club is a social club for single people, 50 and older, divorced, widowed, or never married, who love to get out and have a good time. Meetings are at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at Hobart Elks Lodge 1152, 3580 W. 61st Ave. Free dance lessons are held at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday followed by a dance at 8 p.m. (nonmembers pay $6), at Hobart Elks Lodge 1152. A monthly get together is also held at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at Villa Pizza, 333 N. Broad St., Griffith, and a Sunday brunch on the fourth Sunday of every month is held at different restaurants. Current members, about 160, come from Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago. Members also enjoy house parties and attend concerts, plays and movies together. Visitors are welcome before deciding to join.

FREE COMPUTER WORKSHOPS | University Park 

The Governors State University Library is offering free computer workshops to members of the community, students, staff, and faculty. Workshop topics include blogging, Power Point basic, APA style formatting, plagiarism detection, and several workshops on genealogy. The workshops will take place in February, March, and April. Registration is recommended, but not required. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE CAREER FAIR | University Park

The Office of Career Services at Governors State University is sponsoring a career fair featuring employers in the field of criminal justice. Current students, alumni, and community members interested in finding employment in law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and related fields are encouraged to attend. Potential employers will be on hand from both public and private sectors. The Criminal Justice Career Fair is from 3 to 6:30 p.m. March 25 in the Hall of Governors at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway. While the Criminal Justice Career Fair is free and open to the public, employers who wish to participate must register and pay a registration fee.

PAGEANT | Matteson

The Jassac Charitable Foundation Inc, and the Joliet Area/South Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will present 30 girls ranging in ages from 5 to 13 in the first Little Miss D.S.T. Pageant. The pageant takes place at 4 p.m. March 27 at Victory Apostolic Church, 2801 Matteson Ave. The event is a fundraiser with the proceeds supporting various recipients and scholarships for the Joliet area and south suburban communities. TEA PARTY | Merrillville

Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, affiliated with Alzheimer's Foundation of America will hold an American Girl Tea Party fundraiser from 2 to 4 p.m. March 27, hosted by Spring Mill Health Campus,101 W. 87th Ave. Cost is $20, which includes lunch, tea and an entry ticket to win Lanie Holland, the 2010 American Girl Doll of the Year. Community vendors and a raffle table will be available. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

CRAFT, BAKE SALE | Chicago

EASTER EGG HUNTS | Calumet City

The Calumet Memorial Park District's annual Easter egg hunts take place at noon March 27. The hunts are free for children ages 12 and younger.  Hunts will be held at four sites: Burnham Park, Greenbay Avenue and 138th Street; Memorial Park, Wentworth Avenue and Memorial Drive; Sandridge Center, Oglesby Avenue and Memorial Drive and Veterans Park, Burnham Avenue and 165th Street.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS | Crete

Battle of the Books will take place in the Crete Public Library's Children's Department, 1177 N. Main St., from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 29 and March 30. The library hosts this annual event where six area schools and one homeschool group compete in answering questions about the books they have read. They are judged on their accuracy and knowledge of the books. Sponsoring this annual event is Friends of the Crete Library, First United Bank, Harris Bank and Northwoods restaurant.
