TOUCH-A-TRUCK | Lansing
The Lansing Police Cadets are hosting a touch-a-truck event from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 10 at the Lansing Municipal Airport, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Wentworth Avenue. Overflow parking will be at Bethel Reformed Church. There will be a variety of emergency, construction and heavy equipment to see and touch. There will be a canine demonstration and child car seat safety checks. Minimum donation for admission is $20 for a family, $5 for single admission. Children under 1 year old are free. All proceeds will fund the police cadets attending the 2010 National Law Enforcement Explorers Conference. Event is rain or shine.

The South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society will conduct its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. April 10 at the Hazel Crest Municipal Center and Police Department, 3000 W. 170th Place. Officers for the upcoming year will be announced by the nominating committee. Program will be the "Early Churches of the Calumet Region" presented by Kenneth J. Schoon. He will talk on the churches' start in the 1800s. Reservations are now being accepted for the annual birthday celebration to be held on May 15, at the Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete. The South Suburban College Fitness Center and South Suburban Overall Body Fitness Club hosts their fourth annual fitness and health expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13. Admission is free. The International Quilt Festival kicks off with a preview night from 5 to 9 p.m. April 15 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 555 N. River Road. The Women's Committee of United Auto Workers of Local 551 working at Ford Motor Co.'s Chicago Assembly Plant is kicking off a "Pay it Forward" contest for local students. The mission is to motivate students in fifth through 12th grades to become more aware of their actions and to make a positive impact on their communities. The kickoff and information meeting will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 17 at the Local 551 Union Hall, 13550 S. Torrence Ave. The contest consists of students watching the movie "Pay it Forward" and then writing an essay about an idea they have that could possibly change the world. It will be graded on originality and creativity. The union would like to offer $50 to $100 rewards for the best thought-out and original ideas.

Registration begins April 19 for a children's Earth Day project at the Calumet City Public Library, 660 Manistee Ave. At 1 p.m. April 25, crews from Home Depot will assist children 5 and older with a wheelbarrow planter project they can take home that day. Space is limited. Immediately following the project, all residents and their children are invited to assist Home Depot in a planting at the library. Following the planting, refreshments will be served and the winners of the coloring contest will be announced.
