CALUMET CITY | Calumet City filed a lawsuit against Tri-County Recovery & Towing Services Inc. to recover towing fees owed to the city.
The fees, approximately $190,000, are owed to the city under a contract with Tri-County to tow abandoned, inoperable and illegally parked vehicles.
According to a release from the city, the suit was filed Jan. 7.
"Many of us know the owner of Tri-County, who is a Calumet City resident and former city employee, and my son previously worked for this company, however, when our city is facing severe revenue shortfalls, we need to aggressively collect all monies owed," Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush said. "We tried to work with Tri-County to resolve this matter, but we were left with no other choice."
The City Council canceled the contract with Lansing-based Tri-County and contracted with Calumet City-based Wes’ Towing.
The phone line at Tri-County has been disconnected, and owner Benjamin Johnson could not be reached for comment.
