TF North student's play offers twist on fairy tales
Characters from folklore go to court
CALUMET CITY | Rob Hill, of Calumet City, has been writing since he was 11.
He figures four years is enough practice to tackle the task of playwriting.
"It only took me about two days to write," the Thornton Fractional North High School sophomore said.
His play is called "Justice is No Fairy Tale," and he and some friends have been rehearsing at Memorial Park in Calumet City.
The play reveals what happens when a couple of fairy tale favorites get into some legal troubles.
"I wanted to write a fairy tale play, and I thought about what would happen if fairy tale characters went to court. It's not always happily ever after. I always wondered what the characters really had to say," he said.
The play shows the outcome of a lawsuit between Goldilocks and the three bears and Little Miss Muffet and the spider.
Hill hopes to study acting and English when he heads off to college in a few years.
Kathy Komorowski, director of recreation, said it has been a joy to watch Hill and his friends rehearse at Memorial.
"When high school kids take an interest in something like this, we are more than happy to give them a place to rehearse," she said. "They are wonderful young people and we will give them the support they need. We can say we knew them when they become rich and famous."
The public will be able to view Hill's debut as a playwright at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at Memorial Park, 612 Wentworth Ave. Tickets are $1.
