CALUMET CITY | Police are looking for three men in connection with a failed robbery that resulted in the shooting of a 25-year-old man early Thursday morning.

The victim, an off-duty security guard, was hospitalized in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Police are withholding his name pending notification of his family.

The shooting took place about 3 a.m. in the 300 block of Calhoun Avenue in Calumet City, police said. The male victim was sitting in a parked car with a female friend when the three suspects approached the car from both sides.

One of the suspects asked for a cigarette and then demanded items from the two in the car. A suspect on the driver's side then began striking the male victim. When the man fought back, the suspect on the passenger side fired a handgun into the car, striking the man in the back of the neck.

The female was unharmed, police said.

The suspects then fled westbound on foot.

No one is is custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
