U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly said Tuesday she and a group of Illinois officials met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to express their strong support for the South Suburban Airport and to urge federal officials to expedite final approval of the project.

“A group of local leaders joined me today to assure Secretary Foxx that there’s strong local support for a third airport," Kelly said in a prepared statement. "This project will help maintain America’s pre-eminence in aviation and strengthen our area’s role in the global economy for decades to come,” Kelly said.

Joining Kelly at the meeting with Foxx were: Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Michael Whitaker; state Reps. Will Davis, Anthony DeLuca, Al Riley, Marcus Evans and Larry Walsh Jr.; state Senators Toi Hutchinson and Jacqueline Collins; and Ed Paesel, executive director of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association.
