PEOTONE | The Relay for Life of Peotone-Beecher-Monee has announced their committee and team meeting schedule for the year leading up to the annual event in July.

The meetings will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, today, April 10, May 8 and June 26 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 311 W. Corning Ave., Peotone.

In addition, the annual Relay for Life kickoff party is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 13 at the church.

The team hosts its annual event July 25 to 26 at Peotone Junior High School, 1 Blue Devil Drive. This year's theme is Be a Superhero and Help the American Cancer Society Avengers Fight Cancer.

Local teams participate by walking the track, camping overnight and honoring cancer survivors, fighters, caregivers and those who have lost their battle with cancer. Local teams raise funds to support this official American Cancer Society fundraiser.

“Many local businesses and residents help to make the event a success," said Myra Kocsis, ACS’ Relay For Life regional contact. “We’ve had tremendous cooperation and support from the Peotone school system, the Park District and local businesses such as Tony’s Pizza," Kocsis said. “And Frankie’s Pizza of Monee even donated several pizzas recently to our planning committee. It was nice because when Frankie’s heard that it was for the ACS Relay for Life, they immediately agreed to help out.”

Kocsis said now is the time to form your teams and start getting your pledges in.

“The earlier we start the more funds can be raised to help ‘Finish the Fight’ to beat cancer,” Kocsis said. She also expressed special thanks to Tractors For A Cure and its founder Dean Bettenhausen.

“They’ve supported our event for three years and help out at our monthly planning meetings as well. The mutual support between our two organizations only makes both of these cancer fundraisers more successful.

“We’d like to thank Tony’s Pizza for being a longtime supporter of Relay and Immanuel United Church of Christ for graciously allowing us to host all of our meetings at the church," she said.

She also thanked committee members: chairmen Angela Wojciechowski  and Heather Iwanus; entertainment chair Kathy Lindeman and survivor chair Wilma Swanson.
