JOLIET, Ill. | The Will County Forest Preserve District may approve a plan to harvest Asian carp.

The Herald-News in Joliet reports a committee gave the plan preliminary approval Wednesday to address the invasive species. Testing in the fall found a lake at Rock Run Rookery south of Joliet is full of Asian carp. They got there via a channel dug from the lake to the Des Plaines River.

The plan needs final approval from the full board, which will meet Feb. 14.

The district says it won't fill the channel because canoeists use it. If the harvest is approved, it would start in November.

Asian carp migrated up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and are poised to invade the Great Lakes, where scientists say they could out-compete native fish for food.
