I love a good coupon, but I’m not sure I can handle much more of the sale ads and fliers flooding my mailbox, newspaper and email box. It’s nerve-wracking to think I might miss something good. I’m thankful Black Friday only comes once a year and that it will be over in a few days.
One bright side to Black Friday shopping is the mega toy sales. This is a great week to buy toys and an even better time to donate those toys to kids in need. Since it’s Thanksgiving week, it might be nice to focus on using those bargains to help others. Collection spots are sprouting up and in some instances, you can even receive a small reward for donating a toy.
Glenwood Village Pet Hospital, 555 E. Glenwood-Lansing Road in Glenwood, is one local drop-off location for Toys for Tots. Now through Dec. 13, donate a new, unwrapped toy worth at least $10 and your pet can receive a free nail trim. Appointments are required and pets must be up to date on vaccines. Hennessy & Nowak Funeral Home, 400 Pulaski Road in Calumet City, is also a drop-off location for Toys for Tots. New toys can be dropped off no later than Dec. 14.

Toys for Tots is accepting online monetary donations to help the youngest victims of Hurricane Sandy. According to its Website (toysfortots.org), “Now that the immediate needs of these families are being met, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has begun making plans to help fulfill the Christmas dreams for the displaced children of that region. You might think that toys are nonessentials. You’re right, but why should the children who just lost everything have to lose their hope and belief in Santa as well.”

Once Upon a Child, 29 U.S. 41 in Schererville, is accepting toy donations for Carmelite Home and Holy Innocents Center in East Chicago. The residential treatment center and emergency shelter currently has 35 infants and toddlers as well as school age children up to 17 years old. Donate a new toy by Dec. 15 and receive a $5 coupon that can be used in the store.
