BURNHAM | Village trustees on Thursday approved a resolution that renews an agreement allowing residents to obtain a library card from Calumet City.
During a special meeting, the board voted 4-0 in favor of the resolution that extends the agreement between the two communities. Trustees, Brenda Greer and Travis Claybrooks were not present for the meeting.
Trustees approved the resolution without discussion.
Village President Robert Polk said the terms of the new agreement remain the same as in recent years.
Burnham residents who wish to get a Calumet City Public Library card are charged a $100 out-of-city fee. The library district eventually refunds that money to Burnham village government, which then refunds it to the residents, Polk said.
Cooperation between Burnham and Calumet City for a library district is far from the only joint effort between the two adjacent suburbs.
The Calumet Memorial Park District also serves Burnham, and some children in Burnham attend Dirksen Middle School and Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City.
There even was a Calumet City flavor to another action taken Thursday by the Burnham Village Board, in which the board approved hiring three men to work as part-time police officers.
One of the three was Jared M. Astor, whose full-time job is as 911 director for the Calumet City Police Department.
Polk said Astor, whose hiring as a part-time officer for Burnham was approved by a 4-0 vote, is a “computer expert.”
Astor said he hopes to bring his experience with communication technology to help improve the quality of services for the Burnham Police Department.
Also hired was Stanley J. Kus, who has just more than three decades of experience in law enforcement with the Chicago Police Department, Illinois State Police and northwest suburban Roselle police. Kus said his family originally lived in Burnham and that he was pleased to be able to establish a tie to the suburb for himself.
Also hired was Rubin A. Gomez, who returns to the Burnham Police Department where he previously worked as a full-time officer.
All three prospective officers must complete polygraph and psychological examinations.
Polk said the new officers supplement the 10 part-time officers already employed by the Burnham Police Department.
