BURNHAM | A 29-year-old Hammond man died Tuesday following a collision at 9:05 a.m. on Brainard Avenue between Burnham Avenue and the state line near Powder Horn Lake, police said.

Audiel Ayala-Abarca was extricated from the wreckage and taken by paramedics to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Hammond where he was pronounced dead at 11:01 a.m., police said.

Police said witnesses told them the driver of the other vehicle, Leroy Cain, 77, of Chicago, lost control of his 2008 Ford Fusion while eastbound on Brainard Avenue, crossed the center line and struck Ayala-Abarca's westbound 2001 Ford Mustang

Cain was also taken by ambulance to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital.

Police are investigating the crash and plan to interview additional witnesses and Cain. Police have yet to determine if charges will be filed.
