CALUMET CITY | Two years ago, then-9-year-old Monte Jones sent a fan letter to the man he considers to be his favorite actor — Will Smith, of “Men in Black” and “Independence Day” fame, to name a few of his films.

On Thursday, a response from Smith was among the mail received at City Hall by Monte’s father, 3rd Ward Alderman Thaddeus Jones.

“This is real cool,” Jones said of the piece of mail, once he realized exactly what it was.

It was a one-page, typed letter signed by Smith, in which he tells Monte, among other things, to “keep chasing those dreams.”

Smith also was apologetic for the two-year delay in responding to the letter for Jones’ son, who is now 11. The letter from Smith was dated Dec. 1.

The envelope also contained a bookmark depicting the actor's face.

Jones said he planned to give the letter to his son following the City Council meeting Thursday night, and figured his son would enjoy getting even a delayed response.

“He’s going to get a kick out of this,” Jones said.
