CALUMET CITY | The City Council wants to consider changes to its ordinances against loitering, and attorneys said Thursday they will look to Chicago’s ordinances as an example of what alterations could be done.
The issue of loitering came before the City Council when Sixth Ward Alderman Nick Manousopoulos said he's concerned about increased numbers of people hanging around outside Tom’s Restaurant, 894 Burnham Ave., which he owns, and other businesses around Calumet City.
He told his fellow aldermen that it has the potential to drive business down, and he said he’d like to see stricter enforcement of existing loitering ordinances by the Police Department.
The council ultimately decided to have City Attorney Joe Montana study the issue to see how the existing ordinances can be rewritten to make them more enforceable. He told the aldermen that he would study the ordinances that exist in Chicago to see how they differ from Calumet City’s loitering ordinances.
He said he would make recommendations for the City Council to consider at a future council meeting.
Not present for Thursday’s City Council meeting was Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush. Second Ward Alderman Magdalena “Leni” Wosczynski presided over the council session in the mayor’s absence.
