CALUMET CITY | The City Council will spend coming weeks studying the issue of allocating a full-time police officer for the Hoover-Schrum schools in Memorial District 157.

Aldermen voted 6-0 without discussion (4th Ward Alderman Brian Wilson was absent) on Thursday to refer the request for a school resource officer to the public safety and finance committees. Aldermen Nick Manousopoulos and Magdalena “Leni” Wosczynski chair those committees, respectively.

No date for the issue to be discussed has been scheduled.

Police Chief Edward L. Gilmore, in a memorandum to the City Council and Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush, said he was contacted by a District 157 school board member who said that school officials were prepared to pay the costs of having a resource officer permanently assigned to the Schrum Memorial School, 485 165th St., and the Hoover Elementary School, 1260 Superior Ave.

But Gilmore said that allocating a police officer to the school district would make it essential that the city give his department permission to hire an additional person for patrol duties.

“If an officer is to be assigned to Hoover-Schrum, … the department (should) be allowed to hire an additional officer to back-fill the position within the Patrol Division,” Gilmore wrote.

“I do not feel that it would be possible to take another officer out of patrol to fill this position without affecting the overall services provided to the residents and businesses,” Gilmore wrote.

In other business, the City Council approved a $5,172.17 payment to St. John-based Fire Service to pay for labor and parts for repairs to one of the Fire Department’s engines. Among the repairs were replacing rear springs, fixing compartment lights that didn’t work properly and repairing an engine occasionally “stalling out, but starting right back up.”

Chicago-based Eco-Clean Maintenance, Inc., will receive a $36,864 payment from May through April 2014 for janitorial services at the Police Department, 1200 Pulaski Road.

Aldermen also approved an extension through Dec. 31, 2016 of the contract the Fire Department has with Orland Central Dispatch. The Orland Park-based company handles fire department emergency communications for several municipalities, including Calumet City and Peotone.

J&J Newell Concrete of Burnham will receive two contracts, as the City Council approved payments of $5,328 and $6,672 for repairs to water main breaks at 241 Gold Coast Lane and at 160th Place and Arthur Street.
