CALUMET CITY | A 21-year-old mother was charged with involuntary manslaughter after admitting she may have been under the influence of drugs when her 11-month-old baby died in June, police said.
The Cook County state's attorney's office charged Jessica Haynes with involuntary manslaughter and felony endangerment of a child causing death Thursday.
She told police she fell asleep in another room while the baby was in the bathtub, according to a Calumet City police news release.
The Lake County coroner's office ruled the death of her son, Ethan Haynes, as an accidental drowning on June 17 in their apartment at 1609 Astor Ave. in Calumet City.
The baby was rushed to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead after his mother found him in the tub, police said.
But as police questioned the mother and noticed inconsistencies in her statement, investigators and the Illinois State Police Child Victimization Unit began a criminal investigation, the release states.
Final autopsy and toxicology reports returned to the Calumet City police gave investigators probable cause to arrest Haynes, police said.
The mother admitted she uses heroin and may have been under the influence as she was giving the baby a bath, the release states.
Haynes was taken to Markham County courthouse Thursday for a bond hearing.
