CALUMET CITY | The City Council is searching for a new economic development director because current director James Gigliotti has transferred to full-time housing department chief.

Gigliotti, who had served as the city's economic development coordinator as well as overseeing city programs concerning housing quality, was not available Friday to comment.

City Attorney Burt Odelson said Calumet City officials made a change last month to put Gigliotti in charge of the housing programs full-time.

That led to the decision by the City Council on Thursday to hire Voorhees Associates to conduct a potential national search for a new economic development director.

"They're both really full-time jobs," Odelson said. "They're both priorities for the city, so the decision was made to have two people doing them."

The consultants hired by the city this week to search for a new executive director said they hope to have work completed within seven weeks. Alderman likely will meet next week to determine specifics of the new executive director position, including salary and a potential residency requirement.

Gigliotti is the son of Dominick Gigliotti, who served as an alderman and later mayor of Calumet City. The younger Gigliotti also was at one time an elected member of the Thornton Fractional Township High School District 215 board of education, in addition to his appointed posts within city government.
