CHICAGO HEIGHTS | The Marian Catholic High School speech team took first place at the Thornwood T-shirt Tournament on Jan. 5 in South Holland, the school announced.

The Spartans finished with a 425 score. Mark Donaway, MCHS speech director, credits the championship on the diligent, bright students that make up the team.

“Each student comes prepared and ready to give it their all at every competition,” Donaway said. “The leadership and hard work the team put forth shows in the scores they are receiving.”

Leading team members included Kyliah Thompson ’14, Richton Park, placed first in Oratorical Declamation. Regina Hoyles ’14, Olympia Fields, placed first in Original Comedy. Daniel Blewitt ’14, Crete, and Kyle Fitzgerald ’13, Park Forest, placed second in Dramatic Duet Acting. Pia Lyander ’13, Hazel Crest, placed second in Dramatic Interpretation,

It seems MCHS speech team has a stitch for humor. Three teams placed in Humorous Duet Acting, including Kyle Fitzgerald ’13, Park Forest, and Regina Hoyles ’14, Olympia Fields, placed second; Holly Dankowski ’13, Park Forest, and Kalyn Des Jardins ’15, Chicago Heights, placed third; DeAngelo Davis ’15, Lynwood, and Ken Pilota ’13, Chicago Heights, placed sixth.

Moreover, Hannah Lang ’13, Monee, placed second and Kyliah Thompson ’14, Richton Park, placed third in Poetry Reading. Cooper Packard ’14, Lansing, placed third and Jasmine Jackson ’13, Country Club Hills, placed fourth in Special Occasion Speaking. Jasmine Jackson ’13, Country Club Hills, placed fourth and Cristen Milliner ’14, Richton Park, placed fifth in Informative Speaking. Cristen Milliner ’14, Richton Park, placed fifth in Impromptu Speaking. Jasmin Weaver ’13, Calumet City, placed fifth in Oratorical Declamation. Megan Ringo ’14, Crete, placed fifth and Ken Pilota ’13, Chicago Heights, placed sixth in Radio Speaking. In addition, Pia Lyander ’13, Hazel Crest, placed sixth in Humorous Interpretation.

Marian Catholic’s speech team has also earned first place in the Santaburg Oaklaus, Thornridge Tree Tournament, and Thornton Turkey Tourney.
