CALUMET CITY | Two people were critically injured and eight others were hurt in a six-vehicle crash Friday on Wentworth Avenue near River Oaks Drive in Calumet City, police said.

The series of crashes began about 1:45 p.m. when a vehicle traveling north on Wentworth Avenue near 163rd Street rear-ended another vehicle, causing the second vehicle to collide with a third vehicle heading south on Wentworth, Calumet City Assistant Police Chief Dan Zorzi said.

The first vehicle continued north on Wentworth near River Oaks Drive and caused a second crash by rear-ending a fourth vehicle, which hit two other vehicles, Zorzi said.

The six cars carried a total of 10 people who were all transported to five hospitals, Zorzi said. The two people critically injured were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police on Friday were not releasing the names of the 10 individuals involved in the crash. They are all adults, Zorzi said.

Zorzi said officers were talking to the people in the five different hospitals and piecing together how the crash happened. The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team, which is made up of a variety of area departments, is investigating the crash.

Zorzi said it doesn't appear alcohol was a factor in the crashes.

The crashes temporarily shut down traffic in the area, but all streets were reopened by 8:30 p.m.
