DOLTON | A 17-year-old pregnant girl died after being fatally shot on Christmas Day, but doctors were able to save her baby, police said.

Eva Casara was pronounced dead at 10:57 a.m. Thursday at a local hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Investigators said an official cause of death was pending an autopsy.

Police said the Calumet City teenager was shot in the back of the head on Christmas Day in Dolton. She was found at 7:43 p.m. Wednesday lying on the ground between two houses in the 1100 block of East 152nd Street, officials said. She was 5 1/2 months pregnant.

According to NBC 5, Dolton police said she could have been left in the alley for up to 40 minutes before officials found her. Police think the actual shooting took place a few blocks away near 152nd Street and Dorchester Avenue.

Dolton Police Chief John Franklin expressed condolences to the teen's family. He added that it's "unimaginable to lose a child on such a holy day."

No suspects were in custody as of Thursday night, but Franklin said detectives were following up on leads in the case.
