CALUMET CITY | The Thornton Fractional North High School varsity cheerleading squad won the 2012 Winter Meltdown competition held Dec. 22 at the Sears Arena, competing against more than 100 varsity and junior varsity teams, the school announced.
The Illinois High School Association sponsors the Winter Meltdown each year in conjunction with the Illinois Recreational Cheerleading Association. Winter Meltdown is the largest cheer competition for the 2012-13 season and is the largest cheer event in northern Illinois, according to the news release. This was the first year dance teams were included in the competition.
More than 100 varsity and junior varsity cheer teams and 100 varsity and junior varsity dance teams throughout the state participated, including Muchin College Prep, part of the Noble Street Charter Group in Chicago, Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire), Glenbard East High School (Lombard), Crystal Lake High School, Conant High School (Hoffman Estates), Grant Community High School (Fox Lake), and Schaumburg High School.
T.F. North’s varsity cheer team achieved its first-place victory in the Winter Meltdown competition after several losses at the event previously. According to coach Natalie Brown, the team put in lots of hard work and dedication to achieve this victory and has truly lived up to its motto, “cheer by faith, not by sight." There are 26 members on the cheer squad.
