CALUMET CITY | A traffic signal modernization project set to begin Wednesday will cause lane closures through mid-summer for the intersection of Burnham Avenue and River Oaks Drive.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced, weather permitting, that the project would start May 1.

Traffic signal improvements, patching and resurfacing of pavement will require weekday lane closures between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time to get through the intersection, IDOT stated in a news release. Drivers were also urged to pay close attention to signs, watch their speed and remain alert for workers and equipment.

D Construction of Coal City is the prime contractor on the $582,600 project, which has a tentative completion date of mid-July 2013.
