CHICAGO HEIGHTS | Authorities said Wednesday that a record-setting amount of narcotics and firearms were recovered from a drug raid that occurred recently in the south suburb.

The raid at 405 W. 15th St. by Drug Enforcement Administration officers, along with the Chicago Heights Police Department, came following an eight-month investigation, according to a news release.

Officials said 7 pounds of cocaine were confiscated along with 1 pound of heroin.

Various weapons, including a .50 caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun that was loaded with ammunition, an AK-47 assault rifle with two magazines and one high-capacity 50-round drum magazine, also were recovered, police said.

Chicago Heights police said two local residents are in custody.

Mayor David Gonzalez said in a prepared statement he was pleased to see his city’s Police Department cooperate with the DEA on the investigation.

“When local, state and federal agencies cooperate and work jointly, neighborhoods and communities win,” Gonzalez said. “Joint law enforcement strikes represent powerful tools to overwhelm the drug dealers and gang-bangers that ravage communities.”
