CRETE | Horses weren’t the only ones hoofing it on June 7 at Balmoral Park, 26435 S. Dixie Highway, as runners and walkers from all over the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana converged on the horse racing facility for the sixth annual Runnin’ With The Horses Run/Walk event. This year saw the largest attendance in event history with just shy of 400 participants and raised $4,700 for the One In A Million campaign, part of DWCC’s fight against breast cancer.

“I’m proud to say this was our biggest turnout in the event history, so in turn, we raised the most amount of money we’ve ever raised,” said Balmoral Park Director of Marketing Ken Churilla. “On top of being such a unique event where horses are literally running alongside you on the actual track, I think it’s important to keep fighting against breast cancer all year long. Breast cancer doesn’t just attack in the month of October, so we shouldn’t just attack it then either.”

Dina Bair, WGN-TV midday news anchor, DWCC board member and a two-time cancer survivor herself hosted the event.

“This is a fabulously fun race and after party, plus running next to the horses makes me hoof it a little faster," Bair said. "In the end we can all celebrate the great work we do together to raise money for breast cancer research and support of those diagnosed with this dreadful disease. I can’t wait until next year!”

Since DWCC’s inception in 2006, they have raised over $1 million in the fight against breast cancer. Every penny from the Balmoral Park events (Balmoral Park also hosts “Paint The Park Pink” every October for DWCC) goes directly to fund a breast cancer vaccine trial at Northwestern Medicine.

The vaccine kick-starts the body’s own immune system to fight patient’s cancer.

DWCC (Dancing With Chicago Celebrities) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds to donate to organizations fighting breast cancer with a focus on preventative research and access to care. Every year since 2006, DWCC brings together news, media, sports and entertainment celebrities for one spectacular night of dancing which includes a celebrity dance-off, professional ballroom dance shows, a live auction and a corporate challenge dance-off. In addition it also runs the year round “One In A Million” campaign to fight breast cancer. Since its inception, more than $1,000,000 has been raised from this once-a-year event.
