CHICAGO | Cub Scouts of Pack 773 held many events this past weekend to honor Veterans Day.

The Scouts held a sock and granola bar drive in their pack as well as at Annunciata Parish, on the city's East Side where they have their meetings. The Scouts collected 148 pairs of socks and 642 granola bars that will be donated to Operation Care Package.

Operation Care Package, http://www.operationcarepackages.org/ is dedicated to providing care packages to our military serving the U.S. around the world. The current focus is trying to collect tube socks and granola bars to be included in the care packages. Operation Care Package typically sends out 10,000 packages during the holiday season, so there is a great need for supplies. The Pack will be focusing on collecting donations of new tube socks and/or boxes of granola bars.

During their den meetings the Scouts also placed hundreds of small plastic flags on the lawn of Annunciata Church to commemorate the veterans who served in the military. They then spent time at their meeting learning how to fold an American flag and the symbolism of the colors of the flag.

On Nov. 10, the Scouts attended Mass as a Pack at Annunciata along with the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council 3755 and then participated in a flag retirement ceremony. The Scouts provided the refreshments following the ceremony. The Scouts will receive numerous patches for their participation.
