CHICAGO | A 20-year-old Hammond man died Saturday after being shot while riding in a car, officials said.

Hakeem Walton suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head while riding in the backseat of a vehicle in the 2700 block of East 84th Street on Saturday, according to Chicago police.

Witnesses told investigators they heard one gunshot before the back window of the vehicle shattered, said Veejay Zala, Chicago police news affairs officer.

The driver of the vehicle took Walton to Advocate Trinity Hospital before he was transported to another local trauma center.

He died at Advocate Christ Medical Center at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

No suspects were in custody as of late Sunday, Zala said.

Police are asking anyone with information in this case to call detectives at (312) 747-8271.
