CHICAGO | A man who was hit by a car on Interstate 80/94 near the Indianapolis Boulevard ramp earlier this month died Thursday, officials said.

Talgat Orumbayev, 23, of Chicago, died at 4:55 a.m. at Loyola University Medical Center, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine a cause of death.

Orumbayev had spent the past weeks at the hospital being treated for the injuries stemming from the Sept. 14 crash.

Indiana State Police said Orumbayev walked into traffic from the Indianapolis Boulevard ramp. Terri Sams, 53, of Schererville, was driving a 2006 BMV and was unable to avoid hitting Orumbayev, police said.

He was taken to Community Hospital and then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center. Sams was taken to Community Hospital in Munster with non-life-threatening injuries.

Before the crash, police had received a call about a pedestrian who was seen walking on I-80/94.
