CHICAGO | The Mount Carmel High School community celebrated fundraising efforts for the St. Baldrick's Foundation on Friday with an all-school assembly and head shavings.

The school community also recognized two of its members — Patrick McNamara, who passed away in 2011 after battling a recurrent brain tumor for more than 10 years, and Ronan Flahery, a senior who is undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was diagnosed in December, shortly after helping Mount Carmel win the Class 8A state football championship.

The assembly also was in honor of sophomore Michale Melchiorre, who is the nationwide top fundraiser for St. Baldrick's with $135,522 in donations, according to a news release from the school.

In 2012, Melchiorre finished third nationwide and in 2011, he was first.

Mount Carmel's second-place fundraiser, Erin Breakey, has raised $1,425 and is the younger sister of two Mount Carmel students. Breakey and about 50 other students and staff had their heads shaved Friday at the assembly.

Flaherty had the honor of shaving the head of Patrick Elwood, of Fox Chicago News.
