Nordikids earn scholarships

MUNSTER | Eight Nordikids Children’s Club 208 members received Vasa Order of America Grand Lodge, District Lodge Lake Michigan 8, and Nordik Folk Lodge 761 scholarships for college and language camp at this year's VASA District 8 Convention held May 31 in Burr Ridge, Ill.

Vasa Order of America is a Swedish-American fraternal organization whose mission is to promote Scandinavian culture throughout Canada, Sweden and the U.S. Nordik Folk Lodge 761 and Nordikids Children’s Club 208 are based in Munster, with members from throughout Northwest Indiana, Chicago and the southwest suburbs.

Receiving $1,000 Grand Lodge Scholarships for college are: Rachel Hannigan, of Munster; Abigail Ogrentz, of Chicago; and Katie Westlund, of Schererville.

Receiving $1,750 District Lodge Lake Michigan 8 college scholarships are Hannigan, Ogrentz, Westlund and Emily Pearson, of Hammond.

Recipients of Concordia Swedish Language Camp Scholarships valued at $2,500) are Steven Lesko, of Hickory Hills, Ill.; Harrison Ogrentz, of Chicago; and Jennifer Pearson and Melissa Pearson, both of Hammond.

Nordikids meets weekly, September through June, at Ridge United Methodist Church, 8607 Columbia Ave.,  where they learn the language, songs, folk dances and traditions of Scandinavia.

Munster resident Lynda Smith began the group in 2001 and it quickly grew and spurred the formation of a new VASA Lodge. Today, there are more than 60 members.

Nordikids performs annually at the Museum of Science and Industry’s “Christmas Around the World” and community International Festivals, various Midsummer Festivals from Elgin, Ill. to Chellberg Farm in Chesterton, and for their own Lucia Fest and Spring Fest. 

Lodge 761 holds genealogy classes from September through June at Ridge United Methodist Church. It also hosts a Viking Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Munster branch of the Lake County Public Library, 8701 Calumet Ave. All events are open to the public.
