PARK FOREST | The village of Park Forest will offer free parking in both village-owned Metra lots at the 211th Street Station as well as the Matteson Station during the month of August.
The promotion will save Metra Electric Line commuters close to $30 for the month. Commuters typically pay an average of $1.25 to $1.50 a day to park in neighboring lots on weekdays.
Park Forest Village Finance Director Mary Dankowski says the lots have lost some commuters over the last year due to construction. Part of the purpose of the effort is to regain patronage while thanking the commuters who have remained loyal to Park Forest lots through the construction period.
“It’s hard to change driving patterns once they’ve changed. Some commuters have opted for other lots due to construction. Thankfully, many others have continued to use our lots despite some headaches that come along with construction. We want to thank them, and encourage other riders to come check out everything our lots now have to offer.”
Park Forest recently rehabilitated both lots, with the most drastic improvement at the Matteson Station’s commuter lot.
The Matteson lot now boasts new payment boxes, which accept credit and debit cards, as well as new bike lockers. The addition of a kiss and ride lane now allows for easier drop-off and pick-up of Metra riders. A new park adjacent to the station, which Park Forest officials hope will become a national tourist destination, the Park Forest Rail Fan Park, is the latest addition.
Dankowski hopes the 440 spaces at the 211th Street Station and the 555 spaces at the Matteson Station are all utilized not just in August but going forward.
“We hope those who take advantage of our August promotion decide to make our lots their lots of first choice in the future. There are a lot of things that have been added to enhance the commuter experience and it’s a great value."
The cost to park at one of the two Park Forest-owned Metra commuter lots following August’s promotion is $1 a day.
