During our morning walk on Monday, my son and I stopped at the Hegewisch branch of the Chicago Public Library. There was a special story time going on and the kids were loving it as the storyteller told of a ghost chase. The attendees ran in place, laughed and clapped along with her.
I found out that the library offers story time from 11 to 11:45 a.m. every Wednesday this month at the branch, 3048 E. 130th St. It’s for children 5 and younger. I look forward to checking it out soon.
The library will also have a program for kids on Halloween. From 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31 ages 8 and older can come to Spooktacular Stories.
For adults, the library will host Wycinanki, the Art of Polish Paper Cutouts. This will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Hegewisch branch. Artist Grace Bazylewski will lead the program, which is held as part of the library’s celebration of Polish American Heritage Month.
Bazylewski is the daughter of post World War II political immigrants and she learned the art of wycinaki from Polish artists living in the United States while a member of the Polish Youth Association, Harcerstwo. She has been a teacher and practitioner of the folk art form for more than 35 years.
It’s recommended for ages 10 and older but younger children can attend with an adult.

It costs $15 for adults, $8 for children 13 and younger and is free for kids younger than 5. Ticket price includes admission for both days. There will be vendors and educational talks related to reptiles.
