CHICAGO | All lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway at the ramp for the inbound Chicago Skyway were expected open at 5 a.m. Wednesday after the installation of shoring towers and the removal of portions of a concrete bridge after they were damaged Tuesday.
The ramp from the Chicago Skyway to the Dan Ryan Expressway was closed Tuesday after damage to a concrete bridge rail on the Metra Rock Island Flyover Bridge at 63rd Street early Tuesday, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
A section of the bridge was destabilized while demolition was under way Monday night, IDOT said in a news release.
On Tuesday afternoon, all lanes of the inbound Skyway to the Dan Ryan were closed to allow for the installation of shoring towers on the ramps.
At 8 p.m., the inbound Dan Ryan local lanes were completely closed throughout the night while the concrete sections were removed. At 10 p.m., the inbound Dan Ryan express lanes were subject to intermittent full closures through the night until 5 a.m.
According to Illinois State Police, the damage occurred around 2:15 a.m. when contractors conducting routine maintenance for Metra damaged the bridge.
State police said the bridge has been deemed unsafe for motorists.
Neither Metra nor the South Shore commuter rail line reported any delays as a result of the damage.
