As a devoted fan of Valentine’s Day, I’ve faced my share of Valentine haters. I can’t imagine not loving a day devoted to hearts and the color pink and candy. That’s like not loving puppies or rainbows, but to each his own.

If you’re one of the haters, you can attend Glenwood-Lynwood Public Library’s Anti-Valentine’s Day from 3 to 4 p.m. Feb. 9. Attendees will watch a horror movie and make a bloody Valentine’s Day T-shirt. The library is at 19901 Stony Island Ave. in Lynwood. The event is free. Visit www.glpld.org.

Those who have a little more of St. Valentine’s spirit, can attend an event that shows your sweetie or kids you love them to the moon and back.

I recently wrote a Times article about the Challenger Learning Center in Hammond, which offers science education programs to local students. The programs use space as the hook to get kids interested in science.

The center mostly hosts school field trips but also features public events throughout the year. One is coming up just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Challenger Learning Center, 2300 173rd St. in Hammond, will host a special moon mission and chocolate adventure called Fly Your Sweetie to the Moon from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9. It costs $40 per couple and tickets can be purchased online at http://www.clcnwi.com/CosmicEvents/planetariumnights.html.

During the day, the center will welcome families who can visit the 27-foot planetarium dome and see a planetarium show or laser show with Beatles tunes and laser art. Showings begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

Visit clcnwi.com or call (219) 989-3250 for information.

Afterward you can head to St. Andrew the Apostle Parish for some Polish cuisine and dancing with your sweetheart. The parish’s annual Paczki Dance starts at 6 p.m. Feb. 9.

For dessert there will be hundreds of paczki. Doors open at 6 p.m. with polka music at 6:30 p.m. Buy tickets in advance or at the door for $10. For information, call (708) 862-4165 or visit saintandrewparish.com/. The church is at 156th and Freeland in Calumet City.

If your heart belongs to animals, you can attend a champagne Valentine brunch at 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Ill.

There will be breakfast and lunch foods, a carving station and omelet station. Finish off your feast with a dip in the chocolate fountain.

Tickets for nonzoo members cost $55 for adults, $41 for seniors and $35 for children. You can fill your tummy and help fill the animals’ tummies at the same time.

For information, call (708) 688-8355 or visit www.brookfieldzoo.org/CZS/Brookfield/Events/Valentine-Champagne-Brunch.
