CRETE | The Crete Public Library was host to the Battle of the Books on March 18, 19 and 20, a voluntary reading incentive program for students in third through eighth grade.

Team members read at least six books on the competition's book lists and the team who answers the most questions correctly wins. The purpose is to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing.

Sponsors were Aurelio’s, Northwoods Restaurant, First United Bank, a branch of Old Plank Trail Community Bank, Crete’s Walt’s Grocery and Friends of the Crete Public Library District.

The children who participated were from the following schools:

Coretta Scott King, Mother Teresa Catholic Academy, Deer Creek Christian, Illinois Lutheran, Crete Elementary School and home schooled children.

The winning teams and the schools they attend:

Third-grade winners:

First place:  Illinois Lutheran, Book Beasts

Second place: Illinois Lutheran, Big Bad Books

Third place: Illinois Lutheran, The Book Bombers

Fourth- and fifth-grade winners:

First place: Homeschool team, The Night Owls

Second place: Illinois Lutheran, Purple Pancakes

Third place: Illinois Lutheran, Razor Sharp Readers

Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade winners:

First place: Homeschool team, Rapid Readers

Second place: Illinois Lutheran, Charger Readers

Third place: Illinois Lutheran, The Bindings
