The Crete Public Library’s Adult Services, Young Adult and Youth Services Summer Reading Program’s are "Dig Into Reading," "Ground Breaking Reads" and "Beneath the Surface." Enjoy games at the Circulation Department and win a prize. When patrons check out a book and the computer screen message says "GO-PHER-IT" you’ll win a prize. Adults will win a mug; young adults age 13-17 will have to dig into a jar of polymer beads to retrieve a token that will indicate their secret reward; and children, infant up to and including age 12, will receive a goodie bag. The Crete Public Library will hold miniature tabletop games from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Family style board games, as well as more advanced games, will also be played. Everyone is welcome to attend, either to watch and learn, or to participate. Games are appropriate for all ages. Please note these are not role playing games. The Crete Public Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. June 3. The chosen book is "My Name is Mary Sutter" by Robin Oliveiar; an historical novel about a young woman's struggle to become a doctor during the Civil War. Books are available at the Reference Desk. CRAVE (CRete Area Voracious Eaters!)
The Crete Public Library will hold CRAVE from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 6. Please bring your favorite picnic dish and copies of the recipes to share.
Open Mic Night at the Crete Public Library will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 6. Open Mic is for ages 14 years and up. Bring your poetry, fiction, music, comedy, videos, magic, or anything else you want to share.
The Crete Public Library’s teen Anime Club will meet from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 15 and 29. Watch your favorite anime shows and discuss the world of anime with other fans.
Multi-Library Geocaching Competition
The Crete Public Library announces a Multi-Library Geocaching Competition from June 10 through Aug. 3. All age groups are invited to join numerous libraries in the area in the adventure of geocaching. Participants sign up at the library’s reference desk or the Youth Services desk to receive a scorecard with the information for each cache and program instructions. Adults have a chance to win an iPad mini, teens an iPod Touch, and children a GeoMate in addition to smaller prizes. Call the library for more information.
Knot Just for Knitters
The Crete Public Library’s Knot Just for Knitters will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. June 24. Currently the library does not have knitting or crocheting kits to give out due to the remodel project. Come for assistance or advice from your fellow needle-workers.
Teen Art Studio
The Crete Public Library offers Teen Art Studio, a weekly summer club, from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, June 11, 18 and 25 for ages 13 and up. Learn about art history and techniques while creating your own masterpieces.
Video Gaming will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. June 14. Compete for a Best Buy gift card or just play for fun. This event is open to all ages.
Teen Film Club
The Crete Public Library’s Teen Film Club meets from 4 to 6 p.m. June 20. The film is "How to Survive a Plague" about filmmaker David France tracking the efforts made by activist groups ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) who convince the government and the pharmaceutical industry to speed up human trials of experimental drugs that ease the suffering of HIV/AIDS patients.
The Crete Public Library’s Film Club dates are from 6:15 to 9 p.m. June 20 and 27. The movies are "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" and "Exit Through the Gift Shop." Seth Gordon's documentary "The King of Kong" follows the exploits of the two best Donkey Kong players in America. Billy Mitchell has held the world record for the popular video game for over 20 years. The film covers his rise to prominence. "Exit Through the Gift Shop" marks the feature-film debut of notorious street artist Banksy. The documentary focuses on French-born L.A. thrift-shop owner Thierry Guetta, whose apparent compulsion to videotape every moment of his life led him to document the phenomenon of contemporary street art.
The Crete Public Library invites Minecraft gamers to enjoy time with other Minecraft fans for an ultimate multi-player adventure on June 22. Two time sessions are available. All ages are invited to play from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ages 13 years old and up are invited to play from 1 to 4 p.m.
Blood Pressure Check
