The Crete Public Library will be holding an E-reader Clinic from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 3 and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 5. Did you receive a new e-reader for the holidays? If you would like assistance setting it up and want to know how to download library books to your device, stop by the library’s E-reader Clinic anytime during these hours. Registration not required.
Teen Art Studio
The Crete Public Library’s Teen Art Studio will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Jan. 3 for ages 13 and older. Teens will create their own pieces inspired by the work of famous art and artists in this group workshop utilizing a variety of media and techniques. No previous skill or materials are required.
The Crete Public Library will hold CRAVE (CRete Area Voracious Eaters!) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 3. Bring your favorite stew or soup and copies of the recipe to share with the group.
Open Mic Night
Open Mic Night will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 3. Open Mic is for ages 14 and older. Bring your poetry, fiction, music, comedy, videos, magic or anything else you want to share.
The Crete Public Library will hold miniature tabletop games from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 5. Family-style board games, as well as more advanced games, will also be played. Everyone is welcome to attend, either to watch and learn, or to participate. Games are appropriate for all ages. These are not role-playing games. The Crete Public Library’s teen Anime Club will meet from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Mondays, Jan. 7, 14 and 28. Watch your favorite anime shows and discuss the world of anime with other fans.
The Crete Public Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet from 7:15 to 9 p.m. Jan. 7. The chosen book for discussion is "One Amazing Thing" by Chitra Banerjee Divakarni. The book is about nine people trapped in a crumbling building after an earthquake who share stories about themselves to pass the time and distract themselves from the desperateness of their situation. Reviews state that Divakarni is a brilliant storyteller and illuminates the world with her artistry and shakes the reader with her love. The Crete Public Library invites you to an Xbox Tournament from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 11. Compete for a Best Buy gift card or just play for fun. This event is open to all ages, but the chosen games sometimes have an "M" rating.
Knot Just for Knitters
The Crete Public Library’s Knot Just for Knitters will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 14 and 28. No current project? Yarn and needles will be supplied to work on collaborative projects such as Warm Up America, knit or crochet blankets, newborn caps and friendship shawls for local organizations. The group welcomes everyone to bring what they are working on: knitting, crocheting, needlework and/or sewing. Come for assistance or advice from your fellow needle-workers.
The Crete Public Library’s Film Club meets at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 17 to watch the movie "Rashomon." The movie is from 1950 and is a Japanese crime drama that is produced with both philosophical and psychological overtones. In a forest a murder is reported by four witnesses, each from their own point of view. Who is telling the truth and what is truth?
Teen Film Club
The Crete Public Library’s Teen Film Club meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 17 to watch "The Squid and the Whale." This Academy Award nominee for Best Original Screenplay is a film that tells the semi-autobiographical story of two boys in Brooklyn dealing with their parents' divorce in the 1980s.
The Crete Public Library invites Minecraft gamers to enjoy time with other Minecraft fans for an ultimate multi-player adventure from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26. A second Minecraft is from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 26. For ages 13 and older.
