CRETE | The Village Board gave its approval to late afternoon and early evening hours for costumed children to roam around the south suburb in search of treats come Oct. 31.
Trustees, without opposition, agreed to have Halloween trick-or-treat activity take place from 3 to 6 p.m., with an extra hour permitted for those children who are accompanied by a parent.
This year, Halloween falls on a Thursday. A few years ago when the holiday last fell on a Saturday, village officials permitted trick-or-treat activity to take place until 8 p.m.
But Village Trustee Larry Johnston said that under no circumstances would he want trick-or-treating to take place that late, and other trustees agreed.
“I don’t want to go past 7 (p.m.),” Johnston said. “People called me up and threatened us with our lives because they couldn’t eat their dinner” due to the Halloween-related disruptions.
In another holiday-related move, the Village Board approved a resolution that schedules this year’s annual Christmas parade from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
Ill. 1 will be closed to traffic from Burville Road to Milburn Avenue at 5:30 p.m. that day to accommodate the parade.
