CHICAGO HEIGHTS | For the eighth consecutive year, the Marian Catholic speech team has earned a spot in the IHSA state finals in Peoria after winning their sectional on Feb. 15. 

Marian will be represented in nine of the 15 different events throughout the weekend in Peoria. To advance to the state finals, members of the Marian Catholic speech team had to place in the top three of each individual event.

Top performers for Marian Catholic were Emerson Pavur, of Monee, and Regina Hoyles, of Olympia Fields, who placed first in Dramatic Duet Acting along with Cristen Milliner, of Richton Park, who also claimed the title in Impromptu Speaking. The Spartans placed second in a number of categories at the Reavis sectional, they included: Laura Hilger, of Oak Forest, for Dramatic Interpretation; Kyliah Thompson, of Richton Park, in Original Oratory, and Cooper Packard, of Lansing, for Original Comedy and Special Occasion Speaking. Third-place finishers were Megan Ringo, of Crete, in Radio Speaking; Pavur in Prose Reading, and Milliner for Informative Speaking.

The Spartans were able to knock off other local competitors with a total score of 48 points to triumph as the 2014 Reavis sectional champions. Oak Lawn took home second place with a final score of 43, followed by a third place finish for Homewood Flossmoor at 31 points. Shepard and Southland College Prep rounded out the top five.

The Spartans will look to top last year’s third place finish in the state finals. The state finals will take place at the Peoria Civic Center Friday and Saturday.
