CRETE | The Crete Park District hosts Crete Park-A-Palooza from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Park, 1550 Sangamon St.
The event will feature free activities including a two-ane bungee run, a chaos obstacle course, Tiki Island and Ice Age bounce houses, tropical toddler town, water blasters, tie dye shirts for the first 500 people, hay rides and a visit with South Paw. Several community booths will also be featured.
At the free Touch-A-Truck, fans of all ages can climb into, on and around various vehicles and equipment that local businesses will be bringing for the kids to enjoy. This event has everything from farm tractors to military vehicles for the kids to play on and in. The big red town truck from TMW towing will be featured again this year, along with various firetrucks, payloaders and tractors brought out by Crete Garden Center, Crete Fire Department, the village of Crete, Crete Township Highway Department and Shorewood Home and Auto.
"This event is really exciting for the kids and adults equally and depends on the generosity of local businesses to volunteer their day and equipment to make it a success," said Crete Park District Assistant Director Therese Hale. Weather permitting, a Lifestar Helicopter is scheduled to land at noon as part of the Touch-A-Truck.
The "Taste of Crete" will also be part of Park-A-Palooza, featuring Ultimate Flavors Popcorn Shoppe, ribs from Smokey Jo's, Jason's Pub cheeseburgers and Polish sausage, Annie's Cafe ice cream, Aurelio's Pizza and the American Legion hot dog and corn roast. Crete Lions Club will be running the beer garden and Crete Park District is sponsoring live music featuring Vince Schrementi and his band, "Replay!" from noon to 5 p.m. Crete Lions Club will also be sponsoring a beep baseball game featuring blind baseball players who play with a beeping ball from 11 a.m. to noon.
This year Crete Park District has added "Beanapalooza" to the schedule. This recreational bean bag tournament is for ages 16 and up. Registration is free and is taking place now at Crete Park District, 515 First St. Seeding will be determined by a blind draw at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and play will begin at 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the two finalists.
Crete Park District is looking for volunteers and community service workers to help at Crete Park-A-Palooza. Call (708) 672-6969 and ask for Janel. Volunteers will be scheduled in two- or three-hour shifts.
"We are looking to keep costs down and be able to offer this amazing event for our community, but need support from everyone. Please give us a call and donate two hours. It's gonna be a great day in Crete," said Crete Park District Director Pat Polzin.
