Dangerous waves reaching 15 feet and life-threatening rip currents are expected at beaches from Chicago to LaPorte County through Wednesday night, the National Weather Service warned Tuesday.
Strong northerly winds pushing an unseasonably strong cold front were forecast to blow down the full length of the lake, creating the waves.
The conditions were expected to create life-threatening rip currents that can sweep people out into the lake. Structural currents act in similar ways near piers and break walls.
The weather service urged beachgoers to stay out of the water and stay away from break walls and breaking waves.
